The Many Facets Of Virginia

Virginia, also known as the Old Dominion is a state where visitors and residents alike can enjoy everything from pristine beaches to mountain streams. From northern Virginia down the east coast along the Golden Crescent, the business of defense is big. The northern Virginia area is home to some of the biggest defense contractors in the country. This industry moves directly south down the I-95 corridor through the sprawling commuter communities of Stafford and Fredericksburg all the way to the state capitol of Richmond.

Defense is also a big business in the Hampton Roads area where Norfolk Naval Base is home to the largest shipbuilding facilities in the world. Nearby, Oceana Naval Air Station and Joint Expeditionary Base-Little Creek are home to the elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots and several Seal teams, the Navy’s special forces.

As the first British colony, Virginia is known as the Old Dominion. It is also the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents and is known as the Mother of Presidents.

The state is also a very popular tourist destination with the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and the Shenandoah National Park in the upper west corner and the gorgeous beaches of Virginia Beach in the lower eastern corner. Along the east coast of the state, the Chesapeake Bay provides a bounty rich with fish, blue crabs, and other seafood.

The New World’s oldest continuous law-making body is the Virginia General Assembly. Virginia’s governors may not serve more than one term consecutively and the elected representatives of the Assembly meet only once a year for 45 days and 90 days every other year.

The state enjoys several economic drivers, including defense and the federal government, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. Another industry rapidly becoming recognized as one of the best in the country is the Virginia wine industry. There are more than 300 wineries and vineyards in Virginia producing award winning wines.

Another growing industry is craft brewing. Craft breweries are appearing all over the Commonwealth and produce some of the best craft beers in the world. The state also boasts one of the largest populations of technology workers in the country with most being employed by the defense and information technology companies based in the Dulles corridor just west of Washington D.C.

Virginia is a vibrant state with some of the most beautiful natural scenery anywhere in the world. Visitors can enjoy a hike in the Appalachian Mountains or a walk along the beach and never leave the state.
